'American Idol' announces 13 finalists

By DERRIK J. LANG | Associated Press – Fri, Mar 2, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "American Idol" is down to the top 13 singers.

Smooth 21-year-old pawn shop worker Phillip Phillips of Leesburg, Ga., quirky 22-year-old nonprofit organizer Heejun Han of New York, and spunky 18-year-old country crooner Skylar Laine, from Brandon, Miss., were among the finalists revealed Thursday on the Fox singing contest.
They and seven others received the most viewer votes after the 13 male semifinalists performed Tuesday and the 12 female semifinalists sang Wednesday.

The other viewer-selected finalists included soothing 18-year-old vocalist Hollie Cavanaugh, of McKinney, Texas; 20-year-old alt-rock musician Colton Dixon, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; 25-year-old "gentle giant" Jermaine Jones, of Pine Hill, N.J.; booming 19-year-old student Joshua Ledet, of Westlake, La.; soaring 16-year-old vocalist Shannon Magrane, of Tampa, Fla.; 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez, of San Diego; and soulful 28-year-old teacher Elise Testone, of Charleston, S.C.

"America, you're on fire, because this is an amazing top 10 brewing," said judge Randy Jackson.

Once the fan favorites were all revealed, the show's panel picked five remaining semifinalists to deliver a last-chance tune in hopes of becoming one of the judges' "wild card" selections. The judges ultimately chose 17-year-old student Deandre Brackensick, of San Jose, Calif.; 19-year-old receptionist Jeremy Rosado, of Valrico, Fla.; and 26-year-old disc jockey Erika Van Pelt, of South Kingstown, R.I., to be among the top 13.

"I love somebody who can fight through the tears and still deliver," judge Jennifer Lopez told a weepy Van Pelt.

The finalists will return to the stage to sing next Wednesday for the first round of season 11's finals. "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest announced Thursday that the male singers would perform Stevie Wonder songs, while the female contestants would pay tribute to the late Whitney Houston, who died last month.

Can't wait!! Surely if she wasn't going to be there they would have said something about a guest judge last week right or not. I am sure she will be there cuz I bet they won't let her miss that many and she wouldn't want to miss people getting voted off who knows.

Are they still going to celebrate the 400th episode thi week? :D

I wonder who will perform this week.

Maybe Stevie Wonder? Or maybe this week's mentor Mary J Blige?

American Idol was the number 1 show of the week (last week)!!

Fox and CBS dominated in prime time last week By Frazier Moore
AP Television Writer / March 6, 2012

NEW YORK—Fox was the champ in prime-time ratings last week, with CBS close behind, as the two networks seized almost exclusive control of the Top 30 roster.

Fox was supercharged with three editions of "American Idol" (which took the first, third and fourth slots for the week), along with its Daytona 500 NASCAR coverage.

CBS, as usual, was powered by its slate of dramas, sitcoms and reality shows, claiming 21 of the Top 30 rankings (including "NCIS," which placed second for the week overall).

ABC landed "Modern Family," "Once Upon a Time" and "Castle" in the Top 30, while NBC's only entry was "The Voice," in sixth place, the Nielsen Co. said Tuesday.

For the week in prime time, Fox averaged 10.45 million viewers (6.1 household rating, 10 share), followed closely by CBS with 10.23 million (6.5 rating, 11 share). Far behind was ABC with 6.39 million (4.1 rating, 7 share) and NBC with 5.71 million (3.6 rating, 6 share). ION Television averaged 1.17 million and the CW had 1.11 million (both with 0.8 rating, 1 share).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with a 3.74 million viewer average (1.9 rating, 3 share), Telemundo had 1.21 million (0.7 rating, 1 share), Telefutura had 690,000 (0.4 rating, 1 share), Estrella had 210,000 and Azteca 120,000 (both 0.1 rating, 0 share).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.7 million viewers (6.3 household rating, 12share). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.0 million (5.4 rating, 10 share), while the "CBS Evening News" had 6.8 million viewers (4.6 rating, 9 share).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Feb. 27-March 4, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "American Idol" (Thursday), Fox, 18.45 million; "NCIS," CBS, 18.20 million; "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 17.23 million; "American Idol" (Special -- Tuesday), Fox, 16.11 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 15.85 million; "The Voice," NBC, 14.89 million; NASCAR Daytona 500, Fox, 13.67 million; "Criminal Minds," CBS, 12.54 million; NASCAR Daytona 500 (continuing), Fox, 12.47 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 11.92 million.

Ahh, you have to get with the times! I got one last year and loooove it! I don't know what I did without it. :lol

I DVR it and fast forward through commercials and crappy performances, haha. Skipping only commercials cut it down to 4.5 hours last week. :D

I like Erika. I hope she will be this year's pop/rock chick. I dislike Skylar because she only sings country music. :p

Spoilers for tonight's episode:

Jessica Sanchez will sing "I Will Always Love You" and Phillip Phillips will sing "Superstition"

I hope the judges will critique a little bit more tonight!

Elise... a bit pitchy. And I can't stand her attitude. She's so fake.

Come on judges, tell her!
