Since 1990, Lowell has averaged about 17 homicides per year with the highest being 29 homicides in 2002. As of 2008, the crime index rating was 446.8. The national average was 320.9. Lowell has been locally notorious over the years for being a place of high drug trafficking and gang activity. The Lowell Police Department has made some what positive progress in bringing the crime rates down in recent years. In the years from 1994 to 1999, crime dropped 22 percent, the highest rate of decrease for any city in America with over 100,000 residents.[56] In 2009, Lowell was ranked as the 99th most dangerous city of over 75,000 residents in the United States, out of 393 communities. Out of Massachusetts cities, nine are larger than 75,000 residents, and Lowell was fifth most dangerous or safest. For comparison Lowell is rated safer than Boston (104 of 393), Providence RI (123), Springfield (51), Lynn (120), Fall River (103), and New Bedford (85), but rated more dangerous than Cambridge (303) , Newton (388), Quincy (312), and Worcester (175).

I live in Lowell, Massachusetts aka Mill-City aka Da Murdah Millz aka Da Millz.
It's about 30min from Boston, and I think one of the biggest cities (4th) in Mass.



As a matter of fact if most of you seen the film "The Fighter", well, that's where I'm from. Contrary to the film, the city actually has alot of Puerto Ricans & Cambodians though. I supposed it's because the film took place in the early 80s to early 90s where there was probably more whites then. Let me see out of about 6 barrios in Lowell, 4 of them are Puerto-Rican (other Latinos) areas, 1 area is mostly Cambodians, and the other 1 is of Whites.

I tell you right now the city looks kinda nice from an outside view, but it's kinda ghetto within. And at times you'll realize that everybody knows everybody, but if you stay low-key you can manage to hide from the vultures. LMFAO!

Anyway, basically you either work and live in a nice/OK area, or you live in area where you gotta grind it out and do what you gotta do.

jlnewbie - your place looks beautiful, and exotic and very atractive.. skyscrappers are nothing special imo. I love more cultural objects with stories i nstead of the new modern buildings.

Im moving out to Boston in a few months..cant wait to get up there already!

Yea unfortunately if you don't have a great paying job, you might have to grind it out a little. There are cities that are pretty ghetto where rent is cheap, but there also some cities that aren't so bad, and many people especially students are always looking for a roommate.

There are also lots of cities outside the boundaries of Boston like Somerville, Malden, Stoneham, Chelsea, Revere, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Roslindale, Mattapan, etc., that are still part of Boston and provide transportation like the bus or subway to the city. My sister currently lives in Stoneham with her man, and she takes the subway to work. She works as a nurse in Boston, and even that took her well over two years to get in. She moved from Lowell to Malden, but was still traveling to Lowell because she still worked here and couldn't find anything in Boston, and then moved to Stoneham and then luckily one day got the position, so just imagine.
