Justin Bieber's Club-Worthy New BloodPop® Collab 'Friends' Has Arrived: Listen
Justin Bieber is back, and he wants to be your friend. At least that's the gist of the Purpose pop star's dancey new BloodPop collab "Friends", which dropped today (Aug 17).
Although the lyrics of the song find Bieber longing to maintain a friendship with an ex, the bouncy electronic beat of the track would fool anyone that it's actually as happy as it sounds. If anything, the upbeat energy of the track at least finds Bieber's plea "Can we be friends" to be more hopeful than desparing.
For the track, which is co-written by Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, Bieber turns back to longtime collaborator BloodPop®, who also produced several Purpose album tracks including smash hit "Sorry."
It's worth wondering whether "Friends" will be the hit to finally knock Bieber's own record-breaking "Despacito" run off the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It wouldn't be the first time Bieber has replaced himself for the top position -- when "Despacito" hit No. 1, it came at the expense of "I'm the One."
But the biggest question for Beliebers now is whether "Friends" could be part of an upcoming LP. The pop star is coming up on the two year anniversary of his most recent album, Purpose, which dropped in November 2015 -- and one of the LP's producers, Poo Bear, recently hinted to Billboard that "it's time for a new body of work" from the singer.
