Jennifer Lopez Drops UTA As Her Agency: Is This The Start Of Another Career Shake-Up?

By NIKKI FINKE | Monday August 13, 2012 @ 12:05pm

So what else is new? J-Lo over the years has disposed of more Hollywood agencies than boyfriends including CAA, ICM, Endeavor, and William Morris – sometimes more than once. UTA helped start J-Lo in acting by putting her in Selena and Steven Soderbergh’s Out Of Sight. After leaving, she came back to UTA in 2008 to focus on restarting what was then her dormant acting career after she had twins. She is partnered on her production company Nuyorican with Simon Fields, while manager Benny Medina masterminded J-Lo’s comeback. The question now is, without the American Idol spotlight, will her career go dark again?

UTA didn’t handle her 8-month world tour which prevented her from signing on to more movie/TV projects. But it did rep Lopez for The Back-Up Plan and What To Expect When You’re Expecting which both underperformed at the box office, and in Taylor Hackford’s Parker coming out in 2013. UTA also helped put a lot of TV shows in development for Nuyorican. Oxygen just bought the pitch for a reality show centered around the dancers on her tour and her choreographer/boyfriend Casper Smart. There’s also one show on the air at Tru and another on Spike right now: Big Easy Justice and South Beach Tow. On the scripted side, UTA has put 10 projects in development including three current shows – one each at Fox, ABC Family, and MTV.

J-Lo left Idol because she wants to perform onstage and star in more movies. But, seriously, how in demand is yet another 42-year-old singer-actress given the reality of showbiz? It’s not like Lopez is hurting for money: Forbes magazine this year placed her #1 on its celebrity money-makers, pinpointing her earnings at $52 million through hit singles, increased album sales, that tour, TV and movies, endorsements, a clothing and lifestyle collection for Kohl’s, and an 18th scent to her fragrance line Glow.

Jen changes agents like crazy! I can never remember who reps her. Hopefully she'll replace them with a really good one.

Will see how this turns out
Last few years I'm not impressed at all with her movie roles. I'm super excited about Parker though but cant judge since we havent seen a single thing of that so far. Only thing she did were rom coms the last few years and I'm not in for that. Although I have no idea if that was more Jen's choice or simply kinda the only thing UTA had to offer her.

She needs a fresh start for both sides. Take another break girl. Her acting career has become a joke with all the cheesy rom-coms, and her music career has become str8 garbage with generic cheap tracks like "Goin In".

What are all the people @ Def Jam doing? All the hits seem to be going to Rihanna, and all the whack leftovers to Jen. You'd think at this point of her career she would be looked upon as an icon for lasting so long. But unfortunately her iconic status has more to do with her achievements than it has to do with her skills or artistry.

^No.

Being an icon for your accomplishments is nothing to sneer at. She has plenty of haters but she wouldn't be so accomplished if she weren't talented or good at what she does.

The pop star and former "American Idol" judge is said to...

Jennifer Lopez has signed with CAA for representation in all areas.

The move marks a return for multi-hyphenate Lopez, who had been repped by UTA, had was last with the Century City-based agency in 2003 and is said to want to focus on film and music.

Lopez is coming off of two seasons of as an American Idol judge and off a toplining acting gig with What to Expect When You’re Expecting and voiced a character in Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Her next big acting appearance will be starring opposite Jason Statham in Parker, Taylor Hackford’s adaptation of a Donald Westlake novel.

On the music front, Lopez is embarking on a world tour that will start in the U.S. and then head abroad through the rest of 2012.

Lopez has a collection of clothing and shoes for Kohl’s and with Coty, a line of fragrances. The latter has been called the most successful celebrity fragrance line and was one of the factors helping her land in the top spot of the Forbes Celebrity 100 List.

She continues to be repped by Benny Medina and attorneys Bob Wallerstein and Barry Hirsch.

What kind of numbers?
numbers doesn't mean anything when the subject is talent
How many untalented people turn into success?

And unfortunately the critic don't recognize JLo as a great singer and actress.

you have some good points but youre being too harsh. The music industry is harsh. Madonna is an icon and yet she doesnt get the best either...lets not even mention Janet and Mariah. I think Jennifer gets good songs its just that radio wont support her. Thats the only problem. I hope this shakeup is for the best tho. She does need better movies.... she needs a blockbuster asap!

You gotta be shittin me. Madonna's "Hung Up" shits on Jen's whole discography. Not too mention "Ray of Light" which was released when she was about 40, and shits on both of her careers. Jen @ 40 was releasing crap like "Louboutins" & "Fresh Out The Oven". #RIP

Also, Madonna, Janet, & Mariah are legends. That's the difference. They really don't have to do anything they have had critically acclaimed albums and singles, and have made an impact in pop music history & culture. The same can't be said for...

What numbers? :coffee

I can't sit here and say she doesn't have talent, but at the same time she has been slacking in both aspects of her careers. She doesn't give it her whole. She has not given her music career her whole especially when it comes to writing, promoting, dancing or choosing the right tracks. And she has not brought her A-game to her film career. It seems like she always does something half-assed.

If we talk numbers, "Love?" was a flop. Again, I'm not trying to drag her, but I want to have a conversation where we are keeping it real. She created an album full of leaks, crap, fillers and full of auto-tune, and clearly nobody used. "On The Floor" did amazing I give her that, but it took her how long to have the best-selling of her career? For me that is good and bad, depending on how one takes it. Promo was extremely bad as well. "Goin In" I predicted was a mess from the start, and look where it ended up. And "Dance Again: The Hits" has done less than stellar.

Going over to her other career, "The Backup Plan" was supposed to do great and be her comeback to the silver scren, but instead debuted @ #2 and did moderately well overall, same goes for the films that followed after. Again, "Ice Age" becomes I believe the best grossing film she's done in her career. Good or bad? Depends on how you see it.

I don't think Mariah's a legend, or janet, legends are like jimmy hendrix, clapton, the beatles, pink floyd, and anyone now-a-days making timeless music like journey still is. I think most of janets songs are old and very rarely played as mariahs will be in 10 years.

...

Am I wrong or you just said you know more about the music industry than the music industry itself?

%) %) %)
