Fox picks up Jennifer Lopez' 'Q'Viva' reality competition series -- EXCLUSIVE

    by James Hibberd

Jennifer Lopez’s Q’Viva! competition series has found a home on the top-rated broadcast network.

The Latin American-based series recently premiered on Univision. Now Lopez has made a deal with Fox to televise an English-language version. The show stars the American Idol judge, singer Marc Anthony and concert director Jamie King (who most recently directed Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show). The trio travel to 20 countries to find and showcase the most best Latin singers, dancers, musicians and other performers. The contestants are then brought to the United States for a climatic show.

Q’Viva! The Chosen will make its Fox debut on Saturday, March 3. The network will air the show in two-hour episodes until its April 7 finale. The project grew out of Fox’s relationship with Lopez after she signed on to judge Idol two years ago. The project joins Fox’s slate of competition reality shows like Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, and X Factor.

“Q’Viva is a passion project on so many levels,” Lopez said in a statement. “It’s really our dream to see it come together. This is about creating a live visual experience about Latin culture, rhythm and dance. I believe that people will be so enlightened, so enriched by this experience.”

Lopez and the other judges frequently speak English on the show. Some parts (such as when judges are talking to contestants) will be presented in Spanish or Portuguese with English subtitles.

“Searching out exceptional talent from every country in the region took months of planning and preparation,” added executive producer Simon Fuller. “Every time I have travelled in the region, I have been blown away by its beauty and the potential of the people. Q’Viva will reveal to the world just how much exquisite and pure talent exists in every corner of every country.”

The series is a co-production from Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, Jennifer Lopez ‘s NuYoRican, Anthony, and King.

Jennifer Lopez's 'Q’Viva!' Competition Series Picked Up by Fox

2:44 PM PST 2/15/2012 by Lacey Rose

The move means Lopez will now be fronting more than 60 hours of programming on Fox this season.

Fox is doubling down on Jennifer Lopez.

In yet another example of the net banking heavily on its top talent, the singer-turned-reality star has sold an English language version of her Univision competition series Q’Viva!, The Chosen to the American Idol network, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Q’Viva! will bow on Saturday, March 3, with two-hour installments running through its April 7 finale. It joins Idol, along with other big musical competition efforts from X Factor to So You Think You Can Dance, on Fox's schedule. The move means Lopez will now be fronting more than 60 hours of programming on Fox this season.

The series, which is co-produced by Lopez‘s NuYoRican and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, follows Lopez, her former singer-husband Marc Anthony and concert director Jamie King as they trot around the globe looking for the best Latin talent, be it singers, dancers or musicians.

To be sure, Fox is not the only one benefiting from Lopez's reality involvement. In addition to an Idol pay package believed to be in the $20 million range and a collection of endorsement deals, Lopez sold 309,000 copies of her album, Love?, released mid-Idol in 2010, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Fox will air unscripted series "Q'Viva! The Chosen" in primetime beginning Saturdays next month, completing the U.S. piece of Endemol's massive global distribution strategy.

"Q'Viva," which will air in two-hour blocks over six weeks beginning March 3, is a music-competition skein featureing Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony traveling throughout Latin America in search of talent. A Spanish-language version of the series began running on Univision last month in the U.S., one of 21 countries where it is scheduled to run.

"Q'Viva," which will step in for Fox series "Cops" at 8 p.m., is a joint production from Simon Fuller's XIX Entertainment,Lopez's NuYoRican Prods., Anthony and Jamie King.

Fox isn't the only network putting originals on rerun-heavy Saturday at that time. ABC is rolling out "My Strange Addiction: A Special Edition of 20/20" throughout March, the same month that CBS will turn over its primetime to its annual coverage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
