Jennifer Lopez
The Diva from the Block

Even if we count only her performances in Selena and Out of Sight (and absolve her of her contributions to Anaconda and Gigli), Jennifer Lopez doesn't really belong on a list of America's greatest actresses. And now that she's married to fellow Boricua Marc Anthony, she can't even claim to be the best singer in her own house. But J. Lo's place on a list of most influential Hispanics is a no-brainer. Why? Because over a decade ago, she was an anonymous background dancer on the second-rated sketch-comedy show. Today she's known by two syllables. That's one less than Madonna, and, yes, Lopez is probably counting.

Ambition is what makes America moveand what makes Hispanics move to America. As the Bronx-born daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants, Lopez, 36, has an outsider's hunger and a native's assumption of infinite possibility. She works hard and dreams big. In 2001 she became the first actress to have a movie (The Wedding Planner) and an album (J. Lo) top the charts in the same week. Now there are clothing lines (JLO by Jennifer Lopez and the newly launched Sweetface) and fragrances (Glow, Still), which together brought in more than $300 million in revenue in 2004, making her the 19th richest person under 40, according to Fortune magazine.

Lopez's lunge for icon status has not always been graceful. Her movie choices are sometimes bizarre, and her string of boyfriends (P. Diddy), husbands (remember Cris Judd?) and near husbands (Ben Affleck) has made her the butt of jokes. Speaking of which, Lopez is famed for her callipygousness, but less so for the humor with which she embraces the public discussion of her curves. (She once described her backside as "two potatoes on sticks.") Lopez speaks of her shape as a cultural legacyand one she's quite proud of. She may want to rule the world, but, like the lady says, at least in some ways she's still Jenny from the block.

Yeah, it is a nice honor. Time Magazine is a pretty respectable magazine.

Here is another article:

Lopez, Rodriguez, Romero on Time list of influential Hispanics

August 14, 2005, 6:47 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) _ Time magazine has named singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, designer Narciso Rodriguez and American Civil Liberties Union executive director Anthony Romero to its list of the nation's 25 most influential Hispanics.

The magazine also named Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, actress Salma Hayek, broadcaster Jorge Ramos and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to its list.

Lopez was chosen, the magazine said in a press release, for her rise from background dancer to chart-topping actress and singer. Her clothing lines and fragrances brought in more than $300 million in revenue last year, the magazine said, making her the 19th-wealthiest person under 40.

The list is the topic of Time's cover story, available on its Web site, time.com, and on newsstands Monday.

I hate when props are due, they still manage to find a way to stick as much sarcasm into the article as they can, saying anything they can to bring her down, smh. Might as well keep their lil "honor" imo.

She may be American, but she's still Latin and that's part of her appeal.

"i don't consider her hispanic at all. i see her as an all american. she sure acts like an all american. "

There's no such thing as an all American. North Americans all came from somewhere else, somewhere down the line.

Anyway, bottomline is that she's a Hispanic American and it's really good to see a celebrity proud of her heritage. Unlike girls like Jessica Alba that don't want to be considered ethnic or latin in her case.

Congrats to Jennifer.

I don't mean this to sound offensive (who am i kidding?) but of course she's not on the list! What has she done that's so inspiring? But I have to disagree with someone who said J.Alba isn't proud of her latin heritage...she's said on several occasions that she is latin and proud of it. don't try to make her out to be ashamed just cuz you might not like her ppl...

I concur.^ The only thing I've ever heard her say is that she doesn't want to be stuck playing only "Latina" roles.
