Celebs, U.N. honor those who rose up
By Kelly Carter, Special for USA TODAY
NEW YORK The super-rich, led by Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony in a rare public appearance as a couple, mingled with nine unsung heroes who were honored at the United Nations on Tuesday.

Lopez, radiant in a figure-flattering black Rochas gown, her voice cracking, presented the evening's first award to Shakila, a woman from Afghanistan who was saved from an abusive marriage and later started a tailoring business after borrowing the equivalent of $100 from Parwaz, a local microfinance institution.

Tim Robbins hosted the United Nations Year of Microcredit Gala "Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Poverty Eradication," which paid tribute to the low-income entrepreneurs who traveled from poor countries worldwide and have used microfinance services to fight poverty.

"Give a man or woman an opportunity to create a business and five years later, there are 1,000 jobs there," Robbins said.

Chelsea Clinton, Judith Light, Alyssa Milano, Richard Branson, Rebecca De Mornay, Rory Kennedy, Kelly Stone and the U.N.'s Christina Barrineau also presented awards.

Didn't it seem odd to bring in American celebrities, whose incomes are well above average, when the poor from around the world are being honored?

"I'm here as a citizen, not as an actress," said De Mornay, who wore Romeo Gigli. A year ago, she became involved with the Foundation for International Community Assistance. "They asked me here because I'm an actress, but that's not why I'm here."

The event was a reunion for Light and Milano, who starred together on the 1984-92 hit TV show Who's the Boss?

For the past few years, Milano has been a UNICEF ambassador. "Tonight is about giving people hope," said Milano, dressed in a strapless black cocktail-length dress by Diane von Furstenberg. "The only way we're going to eradicate poverty is to empower people."

its probably just that Scott is doing her makeup again so you're just adjusting to the new look after a few years of her having other makeup artists.

i doubt she's had work done yet, coz if you look at the HQ's you can see lines.

One day she probably will, not that its a big dealio, as long as she dosent go overboard. a lil facelift or botox never hurt anyone, lol.

i just watched the video of the event (link at Jen-Lopez.org).....Jen's part is at 1hr 33mins and goes for about 7 or 8 mins.

It was truly touching to watch. The woman Jen presented her award to has such a big life story, and Jen articulated it very well and got quite emotional, it was very touching.

Its such a good thing that Jen does stuff like this, and im so proud of her for it becuase its a very good way to shed light on the situations of people around the world who suffer, struggle and overcome.

Look at the difference from these pics to the other Gala. She looks so much younger here. She looks fresh.

If you just click the link, it works. 8o You can't download it...

Thanks for the info, Jess and Ant. :)

I like when she's like, "Ummm...I'm here to present again". lol It's funny how she gets nervous presenting awards since she's done it a billion times.

^ Well she hasn't done it thaaat often :p maybe she's nervous since the UN isn't her usual crowd. lol

I wonder how she came to be invited to this event...it's cool she's there. Celebrities discussing world poverty still kills me though.

she was probably nervous becuase its not some actor winning, this is a phenomenal woman who she presented the award to and she didnt wanna mess it up. and yeah, the UN isnt her usual event. Which is great, its good to see shes getting invited to these things.

and yeah, she looks totally different at this gala than the one 2 days later. So much more glowing (her fake tan musta worn off by the 2 days later, lol), and the less makeup made her look younger.
