                      Dancing on stiletto heels
J.Lo shows she’s the most bootylicious singer in the world right now

BEYONCE who? Although the Destiny Child pop trio, of which Beyonce was a member, may have popularised the term ‘bootylicious’, the almost 15,000 fans here who witnessed Jennifer Lopez’s concert last Sunday at Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur can agree that J.Lo is indeed the reigning queen of bootyshaking singers.

It’s hard not to admire Lopez, who turned 43 on July 24, and is a mother of four-year-old twins, and is still as gorgeous and physically t as ever to be able to embark on a six-month world tour this year. To add on to this writer’s new found admiration is Lopez’s ability to dance with stiletto heels!

Her Sunday show proved that she’s without a doubt a top-notch entertainer as she delivered a spell-binding and energetic non-stop two-hour performance during which she rendered 13 songs (no lip-syncing involved) along with six glittery out t changes.

Despite the drizzle and muddy fields, fans of all ages, including a little four-year-old boy seen jumping with excitement, were dancing and singing along to all of her hits from 1999 until 2012.

At 9pm, the much-anticipated moment arrived when Lopez, in a glittery all-black skin-tight catsuit, arrived on stage with 10 back-up dancers (including her current dancer boy toy boyfriend Casper Smart) and opened the night with Get Right from her 2005 album Rebirth, followed by her 2000 hit single Love Don’t Cost A Thing.

“This is my first time in Kuala Lumpur and I’m so happy to finally be here. I’m not used to this kind of heat. It’s hot and humid here!” said Lopez, who the night before mentioned she was experiencing major jetleg on her official Twitter account.

She then changed into a relaxed and glittery hip-hop out t before moving on to a medley of her hip-hop hits I’m Real, I’m Good, Ain’t That Funny and Jenny From the Bronx.

Moving on to her next costume change of the night, Lopez came back in a gorgeous owing blue evening dress and addressed her fans with her thoughts on ‘love’.

“I can honestly say that on this journey, I’ve felt true love. I’ve had my highs and lows in and out of love but you what, that’s life. It’s a big subject to talk about but I have a better idea, why don’t we sing about love instead,” said Lopez who then performed an acoustic version of her first-ever recorded single If You Had My Love, followed by Until It Beats No More.

Having finished the mellow segment of the night, Lopez, now donning a black blazer and trousers, delivered a highly energetic rendition of Let’s Get Loud during which the crowd went wild after Lopez stripped o the top-layer and revealed a rather sexy and glittery black mesh out t. She even went o -stage to shake fans with some lucky fans standing up front.

“I just had to get close with your guys for a second. It’s muddy down there but that’s alright... it was worth it,” said Lopez, who then took a breather and asked that the stadium lights be turned on so she can see her fans. You can definitely tell that Lopez was getting high and emotional from her cheering fans who began chanting her name.

By then, the energy from both the stage and audience was at its peak. Lopez and her dance crew moved on to the up-tempo 2011 electro-dance hit On The Floor before changing to her final outfit, a glittery and gold skin-revealing costume, to close the night with an explosive rendition of Dance Again.

                      ‘The Supernova’ from the Bronx

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in The Bronx, New York, US where she was was known as ‘The Supernova’, besides Jenny from the Block.

Daughter of Puerto Rican parents Guadalupe, a kindergarten teacher, and David Lopez, a computer specialist.

Lopez told her parents her dream of becoming a movie star, but they insisted that it was a “really stupid” idea and that “no Latinos did that”.

She moved to Manhattan, New York to learn how to dance and would sleep in the studio where she was practicing. Her nickname was “La Guitarra” because her body curved like a guitar.

She was one of the Fly Girls dancers on the TV comedy series In Living Color.

Her big screen debut was the title role of ill-fated Tejano pop singer Selena in the 1997 biopic Selena for which she was garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Lopez’s first marriage was to Cubanborn Ojani Noa on Feb 22, 1997 but they divorced less than a year later in January 1998. Later, she had relations with hiphop mogul Sean Combs, former back-up dancer Cris Judd (her second ex-husband), actor Ben A eck and singer Marc Anthony (her third husband, since divorced).

Lopez is a mother of two twins with Anthony, namely, Max and Emme born in February 2008.

She’s the highest-paid Latina actress to date for her performance in 2001’s The Wedding Planner, and the only woman to be twice voted FHM magazine’s Sexiest Woman in the World.

To date, her list of accolades include three American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Award nominations, two Grammy Award nominations, two Latin Grammy Award nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, two Billboard Music Awards awards, ve Billboard Latin Music Awards nominations and three Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards nominations.

In October 2012, she joined several other female celebrities in supporting Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election presidential campaign.

                                Chan Soo Wah

IT was a sight to behold: Jennifer Lopez, the globally-renowned American singer-entertainer, standing on the stage at Stadium Merdeka, drenched, in the heavy downpour last Sunday evening.

Just a minute before that, Lopez had slipped and fallen as she struck a pose at the end of a song.

But this good sport just laughed it off casually, saying: "It's a little slippery out here!" before getting on with her next song.

As this is the height of the monsoon season in Malaysia, I wondered why it hadn't dawned on concert organisers that it would probably rain and would have been a better bet to have held the concert indoors.

It also wasn't the greatest of sights to see almost 15,000 Lopez fans waiting at the entrance of the stadium since 5pm under the pouring rain. They were finally
only allowed to enter the stadium at 8pm. Mind you, 8pm is when the concert was scheduled to start.

Up until the moment when Lopez's band members came on stage at 9pm, I was pretty sure that the diva might cancel the performance but the rain obviously didn't stop this singing sensation – even when it started to pour cats and dogs again.

How wrong I was, especially when Lopez herself came on stage at 9.10pm, to let her fans know that nothing would stop her from having fun with her fans that night. Not even the rain.

In a glittery bejewelled catsuit, Lopez kick-started the evening with Get Right, and it was at the end of this song that she fell on stage.

She stole the audience's hearts when instead of running back to the shades, she stood still under the rain and asked the audience: "Do we care about the rain? No! We will dance and will you dance with me?"

The fans cheered loudly for their bootilicious idol, in the rain, in their colourful raincoats.

Lopez carried on with Love Don't Cost a Thing and even orchestrated the crowd to sing along with her. This was quickly followed by I'm Into You and Waiting For Tonight.

The next set was a lot more fun with Lopez coming on stage in a tracksuit with sneakers and all. She performed a hip-hop medley and took Malaysians back with her to the neighbourhood she grew up in – the Bronx, New York.

Songs in this set included some of her biggest hits – I'm Real, All I Have, Ain't It Funny, and of course, Jenny from the Block.

After all the dancing and singing in the rain, Lopez went back stage and came out again, this time in a soft and flowing blue dress which worked well with the slow and sentimental numbers she sang along to her guitarist.

While singing Secretly, If You Had My Love and Until It Beats No More, the rain finally gave in and sort of stopped to listen, paving way for the next sexy samba set.

It was an amazing samba party in the stadium when Lopez performed Lets Get Loud, in which she and her dancers did a lot of booty-shaking in skimpy outfits that left nothing to the imagination.

One thing's for sure – this lady has an amazing figure for a 43-year-old mother of two!

Lopez then performed Papi and ended the night with On the Floor and her new single, Dance Again, as the encore numbers.

After all the long hours of waiting and heavy downpour, I have to say that the concert was totally worth it – even if the complete set was quite short with less than 20 songs.

To me, Lopez is a great performer who knows how to capture her audience's heart with not a hint of diva attitude expressed on stage.

She may not be the best female vocalist, but her dancing and energetic performance surely made her concert one that I truly enjoyed.

I didn't know Beau was still dancing. I thought they replaced him already. Guess he'll just stick it out at this point, lol.
